Fall Semester 2006
Post-Trip Assignments
Now that you’ve returned from one of the most amazing and educationally fun activities of your life, you must complete the following three projects to satisfy the educational requirements for the Introduction to Marine Biology class. The maximum point value of the three projects is 450 points.
Assignment #1. Reflecting on your Tall Ship trip aboard the S.S. Tole Mour, describe in detail what you learned. Referring to your LogBook, photographs, the Tall Ships website, and your own memories, describe what you liked best about the trip and the most valuable aspects you experienced. Include not only the factual information on marine life, navigation, life aboard a sailing schooner, etc., but also include descriptions about what you learned about yourself and how you matured.
This project should be a minimum of 2 pages, typewritten, double-spaced. It is worth 100 points and is due on October 20, 2006. Turn it in to Mr. Hewett or your resource teacher.
Assignment #2. Describe your specific experiences and observations of the marine animal life (including plankton), and then respond to the following 5 questions. You may type up your answers or submit them in written form.
1. How do you account for the incredible diversity of life forms that you find in the Pacific Ocean in the Channel Islands area?
2. Why do you think there are so many species of fish in the kelp forest area around Catalina Island? What ecological reasons could explain why you find dozens of species of fish of all sizes, shapes and colors?
3. Explain the appearance of the bioluminescence that you observed in the marine plankton at night.
4. What was your favorite animal species that you observed on the trip? Explain why.
5. If you could choose the itinerary for a different Tall Ship trip where you would view the maximum number of marine animals, where would you select to go? What types of animals and plants would you expect to see? Explain.
This project is worth 150 points and is due on November 10, 2006. Turn it in to Mr. Hewett or your resource teacher.
Assignment #3. Go to the OceanWorld website (http://oceanworld.tamu.edu/index.html) and select one of the following topics to investigate:
• Fisheries
• Forams
• Coral reefs
Follow the lesson plan for the topic you choose, print up the pages for the lesson, and answer the questions at the end of the lesson. Also take the on-line interactive quiz for the topic you choose. Be sure to investigate all buttons and informational sites.
Based on this investigation, prepare a typewritten a 2½ - 3 page report on your topic (double-spaced; Times New Roman Font, size 12; 1 inch margins). Include photos and webpage prints to support your report. Find at least three other resources besides the OceanWorld site to use as references for your paper. One of these resources must be a magazine, book, or textbook on the topic you’ve selected. You must list all resources at the end of your paper. Be sure to write in your own words.
This project is worth 200 points and is due on December 15, 2006. Turn it in to Mr. Hewett or your resource teacher.
