Welcome to 6th Grade
|
For the 2009-2010 school year! If you are reading this, Congratulations! You are off to a solid start with your year of homeschooling. On the left side of this screen you will find your "grid" by selecting Assignments for the Year. We are thrilled to offer support for you and your student! There are many exciting topics to study in 6th grade. The most interesting subject matter for your student to explore just may be Ancient Civilizations! To make it come alive, we encourage your student to begin creating a timeline of major ancient civilizations that he/she will continue to work on throughout the school year. The study of the world's most prominent ancient civilizations-Mesopotamia, Egypt, India, China, Greece, and Rome-will be the focus for Social Studies. Your student will be able to take this new knowledge and produce an Ancient Civilizations History Report to meet your Grade Level Project Personal Development Goal. Another option to meet this goal would be to create a Country Report. You will also probably find Earth Science to be fun and informational! This curriculum focuses on plate tectonic, Earth's structure & surface, energy, ecology, and resources. We hope that you will be able to extract from the curriculum and begin planning for your Science Fair Project in the near future. Please make it a goal to visit "Black Gold" located inside The Kern County Museum. This is a hands-on museum that was created for educational purposes and it explores the many aspects of oil in our county. It is a phenomenal site and absolutely not to be overlooked. Please don't forget that you may use your family ID card to enter the museum grounds free of charge! Our school-wide recommended curriculum for math is Prentice Hall-California Grade 6. It is closely correlated to the state standards and it covers number sense, algebra & functions, measurement & geometry, statistics, data analysis, probability, and mathematical reasoning. Parents should spend adequate time on instruction and check for understanding prior to student's independent practice. There is an abundant amount of online support if you simply select Math on the left side of this screen. This course will continue to build on your student's math foundation to prepare your student for Pre-Algebra in 7th grade. VOCS offers two options for Language Arts curriculum. You may choose between the Language of Literature anthology or the Houghton Mifflin Reading text. Also to be used is the English text and Spelling Workout to assist with grammar, vocabulary, and spelling instruction. To aid your writing instruction we have added a daily writing curriculum as well-Daily 6 Trait Writing. We strongly encourage you to complete all of the writing assignments on the grid. We also suggest that your student read at least 30 mins. daily of free reading and we offer quality choices on the grid entitled tradebooks. Perhaps this is the year that you choose to participate in the Oral Language Competition as well! Enjoy your year of academics and please be sure to supplement by attending amazing field trips and enrichment activities that are planned and provided by VOCS.
