Welcome to the 2010-2011 school year! This year in fifth grade you will be learning about the history of the United States, expanding your reading skills, deepening your understanding in Math, and developing strong writing traits. More of your time will be spent working independently and you will be expected to take more responsibility as a learner to make the transition to middle school curriculum.
To help you develop those strong writing traits we have added a daily writing curriculum to the grid. Daily 6-Trait writing in conjunction with your Houghton Mifflin Textbook will provide you with daily grammar and writing practice. We strongly encourage you to complete all of the writing activities assigned on the grid.
As fifth graders, you should plan on completing a state report. There is a packet available to guide you through the process as well as many websites and publications. This project will meet your Grade Level Project Personal Development Goal.
Please take advantage of the many field trips we offer at VOCS. Be particularly aware of those that support your curriculum as these help bring learning alive.
