Session 4 Class Descriptions

8:30 a.m. - 9:30 a.m.

 

Countries, Gr. K-1 Block
Teacher: Culbertson

Children will learn about different countries through literature, food, and crafts.

 

Fun With Math, Gr. K-1 Block
Teacher: Brown

Students will review numbers and shapes with hands-on activities.

 

Triple “L” Train, Gr. K-1 Block
Teacher: Day
All aboard for Literature for Little Learners choo choo train. In this class children will head out and visit fantastic, creative stories that include terrific hands-on craft and art activities. Each activity will make a fun relaxing stop to reinforce basic learning concepts such as ABC’s, colors, numbers, plus much more.

 

Physical Education, Gr. K-1 Block
Teacher: Eknoian

Come join the fun and flex your muscles. We will be exercising our bodies and running wiggles out by playing games such as “What Time is it Mr. Fox” and “Sharks and Sailors”, dancing to music, and hula hooping.

 

Spring Into Music, Gr. 4-8
Teacher: Robinson
Come and learn to play the recorder! Learn some basics of reading music and playing in an ensemble. We have some beautiful brand new Yamaha recorders. We will also be doing some drumming together. There will be a “Spring Into Music” performance at the end of the session.

 

Speak With Confidence, Gr. 4-8
Teacher: Medeiros

Students will learn the necessary skills to speak publicly and to deliver effective oral presentations. This can meet the "oral presentation" goal for Personal Development.
 
Continents, Gr. 2-3 Block
Teacher: Walker

Join us in a trip around the globe! We will make 3-D maps of the continents as we study geography, ecosystems and people groups found across the planet.

 

All About Animals, Gr. 2-3 Block
Teacher: Winders
Students will learn facts about 5 different animals and create various theme related crafts.

 

Seasonal Science, Gr. 2-3 Block
Teacher: Foy
Science is a fun way for children to learn basic science concepts through easy art activities. This class will discover science through art experiences that correlate with the season or time of year.

 

Beginning Woodshop, Gr. 6-8 (certified students only)
Teachers: Shelton/Miser

This class is for students that who have already passed the “Safety Certification Class.” Students will learn basic woodshop skills.

 

Wood, Gr. 2-3 Block
Teacher: Stewart

The students will make a variety of projects in this class. Students will have to sand items, add nails, and paint projects. Students should wear clothes they don’t mind getting paint on.

 

Tole Painting, Gr. 4-5 (only 12 student slots available)
Teacher: Dane

Come explore the world of synchronized painting (not swimming). We will be assembling and painting a letter holder.

 

Fun with Clay, Gr. 6-8
Teacher: Davis
Students will create different projects using polymer based clay that they can shape, bake, and then glaze. Students will take their completed projects home to share with their families. Projects will be different from last enrichment session.
 
“Sew” Much Fun, Gr. 6-8
Teacher: Johnson
This class is designed for the sewer who has had a previous sewing class at VOCS. The projects will be from patterns and some just for fun.

 

The “State” of Reports, Gr. 4-5
Teacher: L. Roberts

Students will research and complete a fun and creative report on a state. Fourth graders will report on California and fifth graders will report on any state of their choice, except California (students should know what state they want to report on by our first class meeting). Completion of this report will meet personal development goals for VOCS. There will be homework! We will do research and work on the reports during class time, but additional time will be required at home in order to complete the assignment by the end of enrichment.

 

Gone Fishin’, Gr. 5-8
Teacher: Foley

This class will review all things fishy. Students will learn about fishing, where to catch fish (not in your backyard koi pond), which bait to use, rods and reels, and fish species. Students must have their own fishing pole and reel. The class will conclude with a fishing trip to Hart Park. Parents must accompany their child for this activity and are welcome to fish. Please remember a fishing license is required for anyone over 16 years old.

 

Harvest and Cultivate, Gr. 4-8
Teacher: Owens

It is time to cultivate and get ready for spring. There are seeds to be planted and soil to be prepared. Let’s get dirty. Please wear sturdy, closed toe shoes and clothes you don’t mind getting dirty.

Algebra, Gr. 8 (8th grade only, must be using McDougal Littell Algebra 1 Book)
Teacher: Gundry

Students will continue from last term and follow the grid in learning the basics of algebra. Difficult concepts of each chapter will be given extra attention in this class. There will be homework assigned.

Pirate Booty Camp, Gr. 4-5
Teacher: Duncan

“Ahoy mateys,” calling all ye pirate wannabes.” Learn the basics of 17th and 18th century pirates, terminology, geography, biographies, and of course “booty.”

 

Lovin’ Language, Gr. 2-3
Teacher: Walker

Students will be exposed to engaging children's literature while studying vowel and consonant blends. Each class will include a themed hands-on activity.

 

Advanced Woodshop, Gr. 6-8
Teacher: Miser
This class is for students who have passed the safety certification class and have taken woodshop for two or more enrichment sessions. This class will be an advanced class for woodshop students.

Students will express themselves through the creative process of working with clay from the first stages of building and pouring, to the final stages of painting and glazing.

 

Crochet, Gr. 6-8
Teacher: Johnson

This class was created for the student who wants to learn the basics of crochet stitching. We will be creating some wild and crazy projects.

 

Bike it or Not, Gr. 5-8
Teacher: D. Roberts
Join us as we learn about basic bike repair and maintenance, safety, and the joys of cycling. We will be having a speaker from Bike Bakersfield to get us started. You will not need to bring a bike.

 

Harvest & Cultivate, Gr. 2-3 Block
Teacher: Owens
Come and get dirty. We are going to work the soil, plant seeds, pick produce, and try out some experiments. What happens to a plant if there is no sun? What if there is no water? Let's get out and grow something. Please wear sturdy, closed toe shoes and clothes you don't mind getting dirty.

 

Chickens are Egg-citing, Gr. 4-8
Teacher: L. Roberts
Students will learn about poultry (breeds, anatomy, and care) and about eggs (nutrition and incubating).

 

Pigeons, Gr. 4-6
Teacher: Shelton
Students will complete a variety of activities involved with racing homing pigeons. These activities will include the history of the sport, bird anatomy, caring for the birds, cleaning their loft, genetics, and training these “flying athletes”.

 

Physical Education, Gr. 4-6
Teacher: Erickson
Let's enjoy the warm weather outside after a long, cold winter. Students will be doing physical activities that will encompass a broad range of skills.

Constitution, Gr. 8

This is a continuing class and no students will be added at this time. This class will last until April 2.

 

Freak the Mighty - Lit Circle, Gr. 6-8
Teacher: D. Roberts

Join us as we get to know Max and Kevin who together make up Freak the Mighty. This is a literary circle so reading and writing are involved. There will be crafts made, snacks, and as always, a very thought provoking story.

 

Wood, Gr. K-1 Block
Teacher: Brown

Children will sand, paint, and assemble various wood projects.

 

Pre-Algebra, Gr. 7 (Must be using McDougal Littell Course 2 book)
Teacher: Gundry

Art We Creative?, Gr. 4-6

We will be diving into another era of time in which we will explore a famous artist and his masterpieces. You will be inspired to create your own works of art as well!

Jr. Docent Program, Gr. 5-8
Teacher: Foley

The focus of this class will be a study of the plants and animals of the California Living Museum. The students will be creating and marketing an educational walking tour on cassette tape for the museum visitors. This class is open to new students as well as continuing students.

 

Ceramics, Gr. K-1 Block
Teacher: Williams
Students will express themselves through the creative process of working with clay from the first stages of building and pouring, to the final stages of painting and glazing.

 

Embroidery, Gr. 4-5
Teacher: Johnson
Students will learn the basic embroidery stitches and make a sampler stitchery.

 

Spanish, Gr. 4-6 (This class is continuing from Enrichment session 3)
Teacher: Erickson
This is an introductory Spanish course. Students will learn through activities, music, and books. This is a semester-long class.

 

Ag. Animals, Gr. K-1 Block
Teacher: Owens
Chickens and Turkeys and Goats and Sheep and Cattle and Horses and Rabbits, Oh My! Follow the brown dirt road to the animal pens. Get ready to get up close and personal to the Valley Oaks animals. They are ready to share their lives with you as long as you are ready to give some affection. Please wear sturdy, closed toe shoes and clothes you don't mind getting dirty.

Wednesday Farm Warriors, Gr. 2-4 (1:00 p.m. - 2:00 p.m.)
Teacher: Foley

Students will learn about horticultural maintenance and farm harvesting. Students will help maintain the farm area, harvest crops and care for the potted plants. Class size is limited to 15 students. Please dress appropriately for the class, wear closed toe shoes.

 

Wednesday Farm Warriors, Gr. 5-8 (1:00 p.m. - 2:00 p.m.)

Teacher: Owens
Students will learn about horticultural maintenance and farm harvesting. Students will help maintain the farm area, harvest crops and care for the potted plants. Class size is limited to 15 students. Please dress appropriately for the class, wear closed toe shoes.
