Week 5 Lesson Plan and Activities:

In Class:

1) 10 minutes- Take out last week’s job listing assignment. Take out the Peer Interview assignment, and finish up your interviews. Turn both into Ms. Sherman

2)Next, with the same partner, read each other’s informational interview questions. Discuss whether any questions should be added or left out. Check to see whether your partner’s questions are appropriate, and that they asked important questions about things such as the following:

• What are the person’s most and least favorite things about their job?

• How did the person enter their career?

• What are the working conditions of the job?

• Does the person have any advice for someone pursuing this career?

• Etc…

Then, write at least two suggestions that you have onto your partner’s paper and the write your name down.

3)Next: Divide class up into career clusters to watch videos on their career interests:

• Look at the website: www.unitedstreaming.com , a resource website from the Discovery Channel.

• Go the United Streaming website and create an account if you don’t already have one. The Passcode is: 99A9-3DE1

• Once you have entered your pass-code, create your own username and password and please keep track of this information as you will need it for this class.

• Once you are in the site, look at the left side of the page and click the following:

§ "9-12"

§ "Careers"

• Here, you will see a list of resources on careers. They are listed in groups. You will need to find a video that gives information on your specific career interest. You will see several videos under the following headings about different kinds of careers:

"Get a Life…"

"Careers for the 21st. Century…" (available in Spanish also)

"Emerging Careers…" (available in Spanish also)

*Choose the one that best fits your primary career interest.

• While watching, write down the five most interesting things you learn and turn in today to Ms. Sherman. If you finish early, feel free to watch other videos about different careers that interest you.

• To add the video to your content, click "add", and then add it to a new folder. Name the new folder, Career Education.

*HOMEWORK*

This is the ONLY thing you have to do this week, so…

*This week you need to spend some time, and locate an employee who works in your career field of interest, and make an appointment to have a live interview with them, and if possible, a brief job shadowing experience with them. I prefer for this interview to be in person, but if you have trouble with this, a phone interview would be a last resort. If you would like to be efficient, then you could have a longer job shadowing experience and use this for both my class, as well as a Personal Development activity, if they are willing. Have your questions ready when you call in case they want to have the interview immediately.

When you call, you can use this script, or something similar:

"Hi, my name is ________________, and I am a high school student. I am interested in the career __________________, and I would like an opportunity to ask some questions of someone who works in this career. I called your business/ organization because I was hoping that you might have someone who might be available to help me. Is there someone who I could speak to about this, or someone with whom I could leave a message?"

When you actually get to speak to the person who you might interview, you can use this script, or something similar:

"Hi, my name is __________________, and I am a high school student who is interested in entering the same career field you are in. I was wondering if I could set up an appointment with you so that I can ask you a few questions. I would prefer to meet you at your place of employment, but I would also appreciate the opportunity to just speak with you over the phone."

*Once you complete your interview, I want a copy of the interview questions that you asked, and a synopsis of their answers to your questions. THIS IS DUE IN TWO WEEKS.

Week 6: Lesson Plan and Activities

In class:

1. Have students share something they learned from watching their job shadowing video with the class.

2. Go over and discuss the decision-making strategies on pages 64-65 in the textbook as a class. Discuss as a class whether students feel that they have used this strategy well to decide what career they’ll pursue in this class.

3. Identify the career that you will focus on in this class on my handout so that I can remember and be able to assist you better.

4. Discuss different job training/education opportunities including their cost:

a. On the job training (possible in construction, food industry, etc)

b. Apprenticeship programs (IBEW, IBOE, etc.)

c. Trade Schools (SBBC, SJVC, etc.; These options are often expensive)

d. Community College (In addition to General Education, they have LOTS of training and certificate programs)

e. University career preparation (Private and State Universities)

5. Have students decide which option best suits their needs and then research information on two schools/programs where they will be able to get the education/job training they need.

6. Research information about different training and education options. Print information on at least TWO programs you would consider joining to pursue your career goal. (For example, if you plan to go to medical school, you would research schools, and on their website, find the information page on their medical school department and print it.)

Homework:

Complete the "Career Planning Project" attached.

Career Planning Project

You will be spending the next two weeks working on this project. You will be required to find answers to these questions and provide evidence

1. Read the "Stepping Stones to a Career" and the following examples of short, medium, and long-term goals attached. Based on what you learned, name one short-term goal, one medium-term goal, and one long-term goal for yourself.

2. As part of your career planning, you will need to complete an informational interview and/or job shadowing experience with a person from a company/organization in your career of interest. A form is attached called, "Job Shadowing Plan" that you will need to fill out for this portion of this assignment. Please see Ms. Sherman if you need help finding a job shadowing site.

3. Now that you’ve located two schools or programs in which you could obtain the education/ training you need to enter this career field, you need to find out what the requirements are that you need to fulfill to enter this training/education? Go to your school’s website, and locate, print, and attach the information that they give concerning this. Then, answer the following two questions:

a. What are you currently doing to work towards meeting these expectations?

b. What are the admission requirements to enter this training/education, and what will you do to meet them?

4. Costs of school/training: Attached is the handout, "Education/Training Budget," where you will find, on the left side of the document,  a list of the kinds of the types of expenses will you have while getting your training/ education; On the right-hand side of the document, there is a list of possible ways to fund these expenses on the other side.  (Document is not available on this website; please see Ms. Sherman)

a. On the left side of the page, estimate a cost for each expense (you did a similar assignment earlier, but this one is specifically designed for expenses during school. On the right side of the page, fill out what funds or methods you will use to cover these expenses. Possibilities include: Financial aid, school loans, working, scholarships, help from family, etc. (If you need to have a conversation with your family about this, now is the time.) Even if you plan to obtain on the job training instead of school, you will likely start out at a low wage in the beginning. Will you need to work overtime in the beginning?

5. How long will you have these education/training expenses until you will be able to begin working in your career choice? What is your plan to be able to sustain yourself in the mean time?

6. Are there any start-up costs for your career, like equipment and supplies that you will need to get started? What are they?

7. What will your beginning salary be when you begin your career?

Informational Interview/ Job Shadowing Plan

For this class, you are required to participate in a informational interview or job shadowing experience. You can use this for both the Career Education Class, and for Personal Development, although there will be two separate handouts to fill out for each class. You will be given this handout later. Please answer the following questions when you locate a job shadowing site:

1. What is the name of the company/agency where you will interview/ job shadow?

___________________________________________________________

2. What is the name and contact number of the person you will interview or job shadow with?

___________________________________________________________

3. What is the name of their specific job title?

___________________________________________________________

4. How did you find this opportunity?

______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

5. What made you decide on this particular job shadowing experience? How is their job related to the career you plan to pursue?
