Course Description: This course is designed to present a logical development as a first course in algebra that emphasizes basic concepts, skills, and fundamental operations. Students will explore mathematical concepts that are foundational for success in passing the California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE). These topics include: Number Sense, Statistics, Data Analysis, Probability, Functions, Measurement, Geometry, and Mathematical Reasoning.
Required Text:
• Algebra 1, Globe Fearon Pacemaker Series
• Algebra 1 Workbook, Globe Fearon Pacemaker Series
• Additional text approved by academic and resource teacher
Required Materials:
1. Covered Textbook
2. (1) 3-Ring Binder with Dividers (schedule, notes, assignments and past work)
3. Pencil(s). Homework and tests are required to be done in pencil!
4. Ruled and graph paper
5. Calculator – Basic Function Keys ONLY (to be used in very limited ways – directions will come from academic teacher)
Course Requirements:
As always a parent has my support to deviate from the given course plan in order to individualize the assignments for their student. Please contact me if this is the case.
• Chapter Portfolios (30% of overall grade) – Parents are required to assign the student daily work based on my suggested assignment. The student’s Solution Manual should be used to grade the assignments. Parents are expected to check for completion of assigned work and grade the work on a daily basis. Students are to organize their work into a portfolio with the following sections: HW SCHEDULE, NOTES, VOCABULARY, HOMWWORK and PAST WORK. Portfolios will be brought to class each week, however portfolios will be turned in for each chapter on the day of the chapter test. If the portfolio is not complete or parent has not graded the student’s work, then the portfolio will considered late and the student will not be allowed to take the test. An appointment must be scheduled to make-up the missing work. Students will receive a Thursday Support Program request slip if a portfolio is missing. Late portfolios are assessed a 25% penalty. Parents must complete a parent portfolio grade sheet and attach it to the front of the portfolio (see brown sheet).
• Class Participation (10% of Overall Grade) – This will mainly be in-class quiz scores. On occasion the class will receive participation points for verbal quizzing or participation in class activities during lecture time. Quizzes are made up of homework questions. Absent students can make up quizzes during the Thursday Support Program. If a student does not make up a missed quiz by that chapter’s test it will go down as a zero in my grade book. Quizzes cannot be retaken for a better grade. If your student does not participate in the Tuesday program, please contact me and we can discuss this portion of your student’s grade.
• Chapter Tests (55% of overall grade) – Upon completion of the chapter, students will take a chapter test, sometimes including extra credit. Tests can be retaken and the two grades will then be averaged for an overall grade. Retake tests must take place before the next chapter test. I do not allow students to complete retake tests during class time on Tuesdays. The appropriate time to schedule a retake test is during our Thursday Support Program. A review is provided for each chapter for the student to prepare by.
• Midterm or Final (5% of overall grade) – at the completion of the semester, the student will either take a midterm or final. Students are not allowed to retake these for a higher grade. A review is provided for the student to prepare by.
Tutoring:
Students should participate in the Thursday Support Program if they are in need of tutoring. The math support time is 9:30am – 11:00am. Students must come prepared with specific questions and all materials. It would be helpful for parents to attend as well. It might also be helpful for parents to set up small study groups with other students in your child’s class.
Grading Policy: Grades follow the standard percentages for letter grades.
A = 93 – 100% C = 73 – 77%
A- = 90 – 92% C- = 70 – 72%
B+ = 88 – 89% D+ = 68 – 69%
B = 83 – 87% D = 63 – 67%
B- = 80 – 82% D- = 60 – 62%
C+ = 78 – 79% F = 0 – 59%
Class Information when absent or working independent of the Tuesday Class:
If I am not available your resource teacher can access my class information and print out several key items, including the class syllabus, chapter help sheets, and testing dates. I also post the chapters to be tested and testing dates on the school’s website http://www.valleyoakscharterschool.org/Mathematics/
