Course Description:  In this course students will explore fundamental mathematical concepts such as basic order of operations, real numbers, percent, measurement, calculator usage, fractions, decimals, problem solving, ratios, and proportions.  We will cover “real-life” topics such as taxes, personal finance, purchasing, finance, fitness, housing, insurance, transportation and investment.  This course features examples in a problem-solving format that allows students to use mathematical skills in consumer situations.

Required Text:  Practical Mathematics, Holt, Rinehart, and Winston.

Required Materials:
1.    Covered Textbook
2.    (1) 3-Ring Binder with Dividers (schedule, notes, assignments, past work)
3.    Pencil(s). Homework and tests are required to be done in pencil!
4.    Ruled paper
5.    Calculator – Basic Function Keys ONLY – STUDENTS MUST USE A CALCULATOR FOR THIS COURSE (excluding Chapter 1).

Course Requirements:

As always a parent has my support to deviate from the given course plan in order to individualize the assignments for their student.  Please contact me if this is the case.

•    Chapter Portfolios (30% of overall grade) – Parents are required to assign the student daily work based on my suggested assignment.  Parents are required to grade three items each chapter: the selected answers in the back of the student text, the chapter “test” at the end of each chapter (keys are released to parents) and the blue practice test (the practice test and key are given to the student at the beginning of the chapter).  Parents are expected to check for completion of assigned work and grade the work on a daily basis.  Students are to organize their work into a 3-ring binder with the following sections: SCHEDULE, NOTES, ASSIGNMENTS and PAST WORK. Portfolios will be brought to class each week, however portfolios will be turned in for each chapter on the day of the chapter test.  If the portfolio is not complete or parent has not graded the student’s work, then the portfolio will considered late and the student will not be allowed to take the test.  An appointment must be scheduled to make-up the missing work.  Students will receive a Thursday Support Program request slip if a portfolio is missing.  Late portfolios are assessed a 25% penalty.  Parents must complete a parent portfolio grade sheet and attach it to the front of the portfolio (see brown sheet).
•    Class Participation (10% of Overall Grade) – This will mainly be in-class quiz scores.  On occasion the class will receive participation points for verbal quizzing or participation in class activities during lecture time.  Quizzes are made up of homework questions.  Absent students can make up quizzes during the Thursday Support Program.  If a student does not make up a missed quiz by that chapter’s test it will go down as a zero in my grade book.  Quizzes cannot be retaken for a better grade.  If your student does not participate in the Tuesday program, please contact me and we can discuss this portion of your student’s grade.
•    Chapter Tests (50% of overall grade) – Upon completion of the chapter, students will take a chapter test, sometimes including extra credit.  Tests can be retaken and the two grades will then be averaged for an overall grade.  Retake tests must take place before the next chapter test.  I do not allow students to complete retake tests during class time on Tuesdays.  The appropriate time to schedule a retake test is during our Thursday Support Program.  A review is provided for each chapter for the student to prepare by.
•    Projects (10% of overall grade) – During the semester the students will be required to complete 2-3 individual projects.  Guidelines will be made available in class.  Projects might include the following: Creating a Personal Budget, Do I Have Enough Money to Buy a Car?, and How to Give Away $1000.

Tutoring:
    Students should participate in the Thursday Support Program if they are in need of tutoring.  The math support time is 9:30am – 11:00am.  Students must come prepared with specific questions and all materials.  It would be helpful for parents to attend as well.  It might also be helpful for parents to set up small study groups with other students in your child’s class.

Grading Policy: Grades follow the standard percentages for letter grades.

A   = 93 – 100%            C   = 73 – 77%
A-  = 90 – 92%            C-  = 70 – 72%
B+ = 88 – 89%            D+ = 68 – 69%
B   = 83 – 87%            D   = 63 – 67%
B-  = 80 – 82%            D-  = 60 – 62%
C+ = 78 – 79%            F    = 0 – 59%
