About Music Performance

Course description

This course is suitable for high school students who want to improve the musical skills that they already possess. The student will receive training in proper playing/singing techniques, music reading, music notation, music theory, sight-reading and musicianship. 

The parents or guardians of the student understand that all expenses for private lessons, recital fees, sheet music, Certificate of Merit fees and any other expenses associated with piano study will be paid by said parents or guardians.

In order to receive credit for this course, the student will engage in any or all of the following activities to a minimum of 90 hours:

1. The student will take regularly scheduled private instruction on an instrument (or take vocal training) for the duration of the term. The student's private music teacher must be approved by the resource teacher.

2. The student will play/sing/perform in an ensemble (e.g. Youth Symphony, chamber group, string quartet, church ensemble), that meets and performs on a regular schedule.

3. The student will engage in regular, daily practice with the goal of improving musical proficiency.

4. The student is expected to keep a log of time spent practicing, rehearsing, in lesson, and in performance. In addition, the student will use the log/journal to make weekly reflections on problems encountered, solutions to those problems, and overall progress made.

5. Research the different fields of Music Performance by completing instructor's reviews, research reports, and/or projects.

Recommended Texts

· Etudes, methods, recital pieces and performance repertoire to be determined by the private instructor.

Supplemental Instructional Materials/Activities

· Participation in recitals, concerts or musical performance in church services.

· Literature or pedagogical materials deemed age and level appropriate by the private instructor.

· Sight-reading material as deemed age and level appropriate by the private instructor.

· Research and write a paper on the composer of your choice.

· Attend a musical performance and write a review.

Course objectives

The students will learn to play or sing at a level appropriate to their age and experience.

The students will learn to read music at a level appropriate to their age and experience.

The students will become familiar with their instrument’s standard repertoire.

The students will learn to sight-read music at a level appropriate to their age and experience.

The students will become accustomed to public performance through participation in recitals, concerts or church services.

The student will learn the fundamentals of music theory at a level appropriate to their age and experience.
