 Week #5  9/16/08

Today:

1) Turn in portfolio 2) Take Unit One Test 3) Deliver Oral Presentations

This week’s assignments:

1) This week you will focus on writing. We studied short stories in this unit and now you have the opportunity to write a story of your own. Your writing assignment this week is to write a personal narrative paper. A personal narrative is a story written about something that actually happened to you or to someone you know. Remember, the end product is a paper (at least two pages in length), but you must complete all the steps of the writing process and the assignments listed below:

• Read pages 131-135 in your textbook that explains how to write this paper.

• Packet -- Read pages 48-49 for a good example of the type of paper you should write. Read the notes on the side that point out what is being done in the paper that is good.

• Packet -- Read pages 52-53 for a bad example of the type of paper you should write. Read the notes on the side that point out the problems in this paper.

• Packet -- Complete page 43 for step #1, the pre-write. Follow the directions. This step will help you get an idea or topic for your paper and organize your thoughts.

• After you complete the pre-write, write your paper. Remember that the paper should be at least two pages in length. See "Personal Narrative Essay Notes" for help with what should be in each paragraph of the paper.

• Complete page 44 "Drafting and Elaboration" in the packet. This is not part of your paper, but an exercise that will help you to add details to your writing. Complete this exercise on a separate sheet of paper.

• After you write your personal narrative paper, have a parent complete the "Peer Response Guide," writing process step #3, on pages 45-46. Go over this with your parent.

• Complete page 47 "Revising, Editing, and Proofreading." Again, this is a separate exercise that will help you with proofreading skills.

• Now that you have feedback about your writing, make revisions to it (step #4). This is the time to fix anything that was pointed out to you in the response stage. You should be adding parts, taking out parts, and basically making sure that you make all the suggested changes to make the paper better.

• Once you completed the revision, read it over for any mistakes (step #5 editing/proofreading). Correct spelling, grammar, punctuation, etc.

• Finish the paper by making a clean copy (step #6). If you type the paper, use Times New Roman, 12 point, double-space and if you handwrite the paper, use blue or black ink and skip lines (do not write on the back of the paper). Refer to the sample sheet ("Sample –1st page of your essay) to see how the first page should look (name, teacher’s name, name of class, due date in left corner; your last name and page number on top right corner, and title of paper centered on the page). All of this will be collected next week. Label each step of the writing process, put the final copy on top and staple together.

2) Oral Presentations – If you did not get a chance to deliver your oral presentation today, you will do so next week. You may leave your poster in my office if you would like to do that.

3) Grammar – Complete sheets 77-80. Have parents correct and turn them in next week. These will not go in your portfolio.

Next week I will return your portfolio and give you a grade sheet for your test, portfolio, etc. Parents, please ask your student for his/her grade sheet next week.

Personal Narrative Essay Notes

Directions: These are additional notes to help you write your essay. You may follow these guidelines for each paragraph. The paper should be two typed pages.

This week’s assignments:

1) This is the week to focus on the writing assignment. You received the Opinion Statement packet today. You should complete all parts of this packet and end up with a multiple paragraph essay. Do the following for this assignment:

• Read pages 220-224 in the book for information about opinion statement writing. This is a great resource that will help you through the process of writing this paper.

• Pages 96-97 and 100-101 in the packet are examples of models. Please read these to get an idea of a strong and weak essay for this type of writing. Read these first so you have an idea about how your essay should look.

• Pages 26 & 91 in the packet are the pre-write choices (step #1) for the essay. You just need to complete one of these. Pick the one that works best for you. Fill this out completely to help you come up with a topic and organize your thoughts.

• Complete step #2 (draft) of the writing process. Use your pre-write to help you write your essay in paragraph form. You should have multiple paragraphs.

• Page 92 (Drafting and Elaboration) in the packet is a skill based exercise that is not part of your paper, but it is required to complete. This helps you to add detail to your writing.

• After you write the draft, you should complete step #3 (response) by responding with pages 93-94. Sit with a parent and answer the questions about your rough draft. As well, ask parents to make any comments directly onto your draft.

• After your parent responds to your essay, please make revisions. Take the advice you received and make your essay better.

• Page 95 (Revising, Editing, and Proofreading) in the packet is a skill based exercise that is not part of your paper, but is required to complete. This helps you with editing.

• Read your essay out loud to your parent. Catch any mistakes in spelling, sentence structure, punctuation, etc. and make any corrections.

• Lastly, print a final copy of your paper. This should be as perfect as possible. Check over the "Formal Essay Guidelines" sheet to make sure that you are following those guidelines.

• Page 102 is optional for parents or students to use as another guide to help check the essay.

Your final paper should be typed in Times New Roman, 12 point font, double-spaced or handwritten in blue or black ink skipping lines. 2) Vocabulary – Find 10 new words in this novel and write the definitions.

3) Read the hand-out about Charles Dickens.

4) Writing Assignment – In a paragraph, describe the two children that the Ghost of Christmas Present reveals beneath his robe. What do they represent? What will happen if their existence is ignored?

5) Grammar – Complete pages 113-116. Please make sure parents correct these pages.

Note: This work will not be turned in as usual in a portfolio. Rather, you will turn in vocabulary, writing assignment and grammar next week, 12/9. Study guides will be turned in on 12/16.
