SYLLABUS

Textbooks:      The Language of Literature British Literature
   McDougal Littell

Course Description:  The course will be a survey of British literature focusing on poetry, short stories, novels, and works of nonfiction.  The student will also study vocabulary, grammar, and writing skills.

Assessment:  The student will be assessed through portfolios, in class assignments, quizzes, exams, and writing samples.

Grading:  Letter grades will be computed using the school’s adopted formula:
A = 93-100%
A- = 90-92
B+ = 87-89 
B = 83-86
B- = 80-82
C+ = 77-79
C = 73-76
C- = 70-72
D+ = 67-69
D = 63-66
D- = 60-62
F = Less than 60% of points possible.

Late Work:  Late assignments will be accepted for two weeks after the due date, and only with an excused absence.  The students must call or email the teacher to set an appointment to make up any missed quizzes or tests within two weeks following the absence (Tuesday students).  I do not offer extra credit in my classes.  Please take the opportunity to complete assigned work in the assigned time period.

Expectations:
Student -  The student will be on time with assigned work completed.
        The student will maintain a portfolio for each unit.
        The student will come prepared to class with textbook and                       notebook.
        The student will follow the weekly assignment sequence to be
  Prepared for class.  In the case of an absence, the student should
  Refer to the portfolio cover sheet to keep up with work.
Parent -    The parent will oversee the student’s work on a daily basis.
        The parent will grade portfolios and assign points appropriately.
        The parent will assist students with writing assignments and be
  Available for oral presentation practice.

Portfolio requirements:
 Students are expected to have a one inch 3-ring binder for their portfolios.  There should be tabs to divide the work into sections.  Each unit/portfolio will be 4-6 weeks long.  At the end of the unit, students will take work out of the binder, put it in a folder (with brads), and turn it in.  Portfolios will be returned the following week.  Parents should assign points based on completeness of the portfolio and sign.

Our program is different in that we only meet once a week.  If you have chosen to participate in the Tuesday program, it is crucial that you attend classes on Tuesday.  Please be prepared by eating breakfast, being well rested, and having all your materials.  If you miss a Tuesday, it is your responsibility to get in touch with all instructors to keep up with work and make appointments for any missed class work.
